Does anyone have an operators manual or better yet a service manual on the Onan 6.5 NH-RV generators? I have the part manual, which is great, but I'm fighting some intermittant issues and want to make sure I tune everything to spec.
If you're willing to share, perhaps we can make it downloadable of the site for others as well. |

I might have one Steve. Let me get home on Wednesday and I'll check. |

Thanks for checking. I found this on eBay...but can't tell if it's the right set of manuals as it doesn't specifically list my K Spec generator. I'm also planning to stop by our local Onan shop for some advice as well. |

Got home last night. Visited my Mother in the Nursing Home today, and then cleaned out the MH and put it in the shed. Gotta get the lawn mowed tomorrow and then I should have time to check out my Onan manuals. I can tell you right now that the ones on Ebay are not the same ones I have. I have a scanner and will scan them in and send them off to you. At least if they are as helpful as I think they are. |

Coop, Thanks! I have to kill the gremlins still living in my Onan. Having power while underway in the heat makes all the difference in the world. |

Describe your gremlins to me. I have dealt with quite a few on my Onan. We ran it all the way home from Duluth this week and ran the AC on it. |

Well...it seems to be two things: First it will surge and product too much voltage. I've adjusted the idle speed and even fiddled with the carb linkage, but it still seems to run up pretty high. Then if both AC units are on it's too low (105 volts) Second, and a larger issue is that it will just cut out. Might be a minute or might run for two hours...but it always cuts out. Almost like you turned if off. It will restart fine after this and run, but then cutout again. Oil level is fine, air and fuel filters are new, points are new and adjusted, carb is clean, plugs look good. I run the genny every week to "exercise" it, fuses are OK, plenty of fuel in the tank, etc. I suspec an intermittant short in the control box is grounding 12V to the ignition but because I can't "see" why this is happening I'm chasing gremlins. |

Okay, I have the "Installation Manual", "Parts Manual", and the "Operators Manual". I think the Operators Manual is what you need. I'll get it scanned and sent to you this afternoon. You can put it on the site if you wish. |

Steve. I have e-mailed you the Operators Manual. It is 23 pages long and I had to separate it into four or five messages. I also washed it through Firefox to make the files smaller. Let me know how it comes through.
I think you may need to replace the governor spring. That spring will weaken and cause the generator to gallop. Do you need the parts manual? I have that as well. |

Coop, This is terrific. It's exactly what I needed. I'll post it on the site as well. I think I have the parts manual already. I'll scan that in and post it as well. If someone has the service manual we'll have everything we need for members with the common generator. |

I do have the parts manual if you need it. I'm not sure if there is a Service Manual. I think the Operators Manual is all inclusive. I also have the Installation Manual. |

Don't know if you have this address, but it can be helpful in troubleshooting Onan Generators.

I just recentl purchased a 1983 Holiday Rambler 34' that is in good shape. I have to ask a stupid question since I dont have all the manuals. Can the generator be operated while driving? |

Absolutely. I run mine all the time on the road. It powers our roof air and my wife's computer. I seldom use the vehicle air conditioner. The roof air works much better. |

Thanks for the reply, thats good news to hear. The guy I bought the motor home from only used it once, and he was plugged in to a 110 outlet. He never ran the generator and couldnt tell me anything about it. |

Coop, again thanks for the manuals. I have a stupid question on performing a basic procedure. How do you get and accurate RPM reading. I have an engine analyzer that hooks up to the coil but it only goes down to 4 cyl. Any thoughs? |

Don't worry about the rpm's. Run a drop cord from the outlets on the other side of the coach under the coach to the generator and plug in a voltage meter and place it where you can see it. Then adjust your rpms to the correct voltage. |

I might also add that my voltage meter proved to be reading too low when checked against another one at the shop. The lowest voltage the generator will put out is 108 volts. Any less than that and the meter is wrong. |

COOPERHAWK I use a "Kill o watt" to look at voltages and also the cycles it's running at.............. My Onan 6500 runs (no load) at 123 volts and 61.1 cycles and under a load (both airs) it's 115 volts at 59.6 cycles, The "kill o watt" is a good tool and the prices are down around $25.00 now. Jim |

Jim, Great tip...do you have a source? (I'm chasing some issue on my Onan). I found this one: http://www.powermeterstore.com/p457...att_ez.php Is that what you meant? |
