Wow, we sure got a landslide of
photos of old Motorhomes. The gallery is GREAT! Is anyone
restoring any of these oldies? Wouldn't it be a great rally to
have a lot of these oldies get together? Now that would get a lot
of attention.
I alsmost bought one of those GMC's before we bought our
Airstream. A company in the Minneapolis area was doing an off
frame restoration on them and had one at the camper show. Wanted
$25000.00 for it. Rebuilt engine, transmission, air bags, all new
upholstery and paint. Wife thought it was too much. I liked
it a lot.
We like our Airstream a lot now too.

We were thinking of the GMCs also. Had studied them for a few years, and even had saved a few cars for parts. 1969 Toro 1970 Eldo. I read some of them put the 500ci Caddy in them for more power. Did not really know Airstream MH existed, just kinda never sank in. They must be built really good too, as so many on the road. I think they have a great history, and may have started the aluminum construction |

I like the GMCs too. I have to admit however that I have a real soft spot for the old Winnies. I remember my Dad drooling over the old Indians and Cheftains when we went tent camping in the 70s. Played with the TONKA version of an Indian as a kid (my kids play with it now).
Someday I would love to update an Indian or Chieftain, moderize it etc. I've seen them in decent usable condition for $2500 here and there. |

Yep...stick and tin. There is a some appeal in that for me as woodworking is something I'm comfortable with. Saw a series of pictures on a Winnie site where someone did a complete roof replacement in the driveway with supplies from home depot. |

We go way back with motor homes. My dad made our first one out of a 1952 GMC school bus. In-line 6 gas engine with 4 speed. When that blew up we put a 348 and power glide. We had the water tanks on the outside on the roof 6" O.D. aluminum tubes on both sides. I will have to try and find a photo and scan it in for the post.
The families next MoHo was a 68 or 69 Champion! Now that is a brand that you do not see around anymore! It set on a Dodge frame. The family still had this after I got married and one time when the wife and I was out in it, I clipped the side on one of the narrow bridges over Lake of the Ozarks.
The last one my dad made was about 15 years ago. A 1972 GMC Silver Eagle. 318 Detroit diesel and he put a 4 speed Allison in it. I should be able to find some photos of that one as well.
When we bought the Airstream 310, I told the family, "At least this one started as a Motor Home!"
Oh the memories!

I want to see photos of all of them.
You know...that is a small problem... How do you see new photos without scanning the whole gallery? And you cannot search for a poster, or name. |

The photo module needs some work to be sure. Don't forget that you can scroll through images by clicking on the left or right side of each lightbox photo (left = previous, right = next).
As new features become available for personal photos, etc. I'll be sure to implement them. |
