    now we're really confused!!

we were told that our MH was on a P30, but started going trough all of the paperwork that was the build out from chevy and found out it's a P32.

    what is the difference?

didn't know much about the P30 so don't have much to re-learn.

P32 is the official name for a light duty motorhome stripped-chassis from GM or Workhorse. Last official model year was 2005, replaced by the W16 and W18. P32s have been made with wide-track and standard track front ends, with both 16" and 19.5" wheels, with rear drums and rear disc brakes. Still a P32 with any of these combos.

P42 is the official name for a light duty stepvan stripped-chassis

"P57" and "P37" are not models, they are just vin sequences that would indicate a P32 chassis from different eras.

"P30" is just a generic term going back to the GM days for both light duty stripped chassis. This term is still used heavily in the aftermarket truck service and parts world (and state DMVs for title/plates) when describing both a P32 and a P42.

    Too add to the confusion:

My orange 1986 Chevrolet Motor Home Chassis Service Guide, says nothing on the cover or title page about Pee-Anything. However, on page 1-1, it says "P30 is the series and size class used for motor homes and is available in four wheelbases." 125, 137 158.5 and 178 inches.

Score one for Pee thirty guys.

Now, on page 3-2, it gives different front end alignment specs for P 30 and "MOTOR HOME (32)" The caps and parentheses are from the manual. The P20 andP30 have the same caster, and the "MOTOR HOME (32)" has more. Toe-in is not even listed for a P30, just the "MOTORHOME (32)"

Score one for the P32 team.

Further on, mention is made of P series motor home chassis, saying neither 30 nor 32. Also listed is a rear U bolt chart with onlyP30 mentioned, no P32. A couple of other charts similarly ignore the mention of P32.

I will not try to make any sense of this. I do suspect, however, that a tech writer or two dropped the ball here and there in the compiling of this manual. Perhaps someone has the later "green" manual and can cite some clarifying information.

Chev gave up completely on the cover of their (green)1995 manual, just saying, "P chassis". Inside, there are the usual confusing mentions of bothP30 and P32, with the addition of a P3 chassis.

.I just glanced through the "Document for Incomplete Vehicle" that GM supplied with the chassis. In several places it mentions the P32 when referring to the "Bare Chassis".

Score a BIG ONE for the P32 team.

Since this GM publication is intended expressly for the bodyless chassis, I would take it as a very credible source. The only mention of P30 is way in the back for emissions on vehicles of under 8500 GVW.

I still say that I have a Pee-something-or-other and let the experts at the parts counters tell me what I have
